THE GOULART LAB is affiliated with the Human Genome and Stem Cell Research Center (HUG-CELL) at the University of Sao Paulo. The HUG-CELL is a leading institution in researching genetic diseases, stem cells, cancer, and developmental disorders. In addition to providing Genetic Counseling services and genetic testing for the community, HUG-CELL is at the forefront of investigating emerging topics such as genetic susceptibility to Zika virus-induced microcephaly and identifying genetic variants associated with the clinical variability of COVID-19. With a multidisciplinary team comprising professors, researchers, physicians, healthcare professionals, and specialized technicians, as well as undergraduate and graduate students, HUG-CELL contributes to improving people's health through the synergy between patient collaboration and scientific advancements. Originating from the pioneering work of Professor Oswaldo Frota-Pessoa, HUG-CELL is the largest center for treating individuals with genetic diseases in Latin America, having served approximately 100,000 patients since its establishment in 2000.
